The Crazy Eights’

After researching, decoding, and sorting through the myriad of codes, ergonomic issues, and proxemic issues we were better able to asses our models from both the bus shelter and shelter bus charrette's. It became apparent that our original designs, while creative and inventive, were lacking in several major fundamental areas. As a group we all have varying experience with codes, ergonomic and proxemic considerations, but generally these aspects of design are new, and untaught subjects we are eager to study further. We are all in agreement that the regulations published by ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) and various other sources, are absolutely pertinent to the design process; without these considerations impairment of fine innovative ideas is inevitable. We feel its highly important for designers, architects and even decorators to an extent, to educate themselves about necessary requirements, codes and human interactions within spaces in order to optimize the users overall experience. While ingenuity is at a premium in our industry it is also essential that we understand the how, and why aspects of codes, ergonomics and proxemic particularly as we continue to progress forward with sustainable design, which has its own intricate guide of requirements and regulations. The future of design will never be evident however, it is unmistakable that our responsibility is to our fellow citizens to create, and provide the most comprehensive, and universally acceptable designs possible. The four of us agree that our future as designers will be vastly influenced by the current design standards, and potentially new standards we set forth. The principles we learn now are going to make us all more proficient and competent designers, attributes that we should all be proud of.

Dear Jenny,

Our IARC class is very big into the idea of being sustainable. Last year we were required to come up with a product using bottle caps. My partner and I's idea was to make an item that was used everyday in the kitchen. We made placemats. Its simple and fun. I think we should challenge others on campus to see what all the can come up with to recycle products that otherwise can't be.

"Ride The Bus!"

Riding: Utilizing maps and schedules posted on the Greensboro Department of Transportation website, determine a place and time to catch the city bus. Ride along atleast one bus route for a minimum of one mile, paying close attention to your surroundings on and off the bus.

This was the assignment given to us in class on Wednesday. My roommate Kara and I decided we would catch the bus to Friendly Shopping center to pick up some groceries. We didn't think it would be too hard to figure out. We pulled up the GTA schedule and found which bus we wanted. However when it came up we had no idea how to read it and which bus stop would be the right bus to take us to Friendly. We knew there was a stop on Aycock St. so we walked up there. We figured we would just ask when it came up where it was headed. This girl walked up waiting for the bus and she told us it would take us to the Depot. We started getting second guesses if we should really do it. We had no idea where the Depot was and how we'd get back home, she informed us then that we could catch bus seven once we arrived. We decided we would go on with our adventure.
Once the bus picked us up we ran into Lily and Jennifer! We were relieved that they had no clue where they were going either. We were talking across from one another and our fellow riders next to us seemed to be annoyed by us. After we got an unfriendly vibe we knew we couldn't ask them if we could take their pictures. So we decided we'd act like we were taking pictures of each other but really aim the camera towards their area. It worked. Perfectly.
We saw a Rosa Parks sign on the front inside of the bus. This reminded me of the reading we were assigned that addressed the Civil Rights Movement and segregation. It's crazy to think people allowed themselves to be so discriminating towards someone, especially because of their skin color.
As we rode the first bus it seemed to give a bitter vibe. Everyone looked so unfriendly and anti-social. I think we may have overwhelmed them because we were so excited to see Lily and Jennifer. Our driver seemed to have a lead foot and the ride was quite rocky. We arrived to the Depot fairly quickly. We all hopped off and hurried to the next bus so we wouldn't miss it. The ceiling was quite architecturally pleasing. It was white metal beams criss crossing one another creating an abundance of triangles. We hopped the next bus and that ride seemed to pick up more people getting off work. We stopped at the Hospital by Friendly and picked up a few receptionists or nurses. There also was quite a few people caught catchin a cat nap on the ride. Like him...

Ive always wanted a hamster ever since I was in kindergarden but my parents never would let me get one. So the day I turned 18 I went out and got one. I named her Margarita and everyone loved her. I made my parents feel bad that they never let me get one before that because they would hold her as well. She died on St. Patrick's day in her food bowl...the sad thing is our family is all about the Irish pride and I have a four leaf clover tattoo on my ankle. I have this horrid thing to remind me of her now all the time. isn't it ironic?

Our final project we were assigned was to design a Habitable Wall. It was broken down into a few couple assignments. We were first assigned into groups to research and produce a book about a particular artist. My group was assigned to research Frieda Kahlo. She was a Mexican artist suffering through a tragic life. She was diagnosed with Polio as a young child and then was in a awful bus accident leaving a pole shattering her reproductive organs. We were then assigned to design a habitable wall for our client. Here are some sketch models I started to work with. My theme I wanted to work with is the "brokeness" of her life.

We went through a week called "color week" and learned about color. We were then asked to add color into our models. It took a while for me to figure out how I wanted to go about the color because I didn't want to just add color on a bench because I had to. I then decided I wanted to add color on the broken column and make it into a "beautiful" piece like Frieda did with her paintings and life. Here is my first model with color.
I enjoyed this one but I felt like I needed to work on the right wall that is attached to the studio so I combined two sketch model ideas into one and worked with that. I then decided I wanted to go with more rectilinear shapes in my model to add a more contemporary feel and added off white furniture to pull away from "living inside a cardboard box" feel. There was actually a lot of controversy over me using the cardboard for my final model. I got feedback that I should cover it so it looked like I didn't use it just to use it. So I thought about covering it with a different brown paper and I decided it wouldn't achieve the same texture and brown that I wanted. Ideally I wanted it to actually be made of cardboard but wasn't sure if it was possible. After researching cardboard rooms I decided that that would be final material.

A couple weeks ago my drawing class and I went downtown to Elsewhere Museum. It isn't your ordinary museum that you are not allowed to touch anything and everything is showcased on a pedestal or glass. It is a three story old boarding house full of stuff. Stuff is EVERYWHERE! The owners refuse to throw away, sell, or donate anything. They invite artists from all over the world to come stay with them and work on a piece using the stuff that is already there. There was this really creepy room that was done with babydoll heads hanging by rope and a sheet attached at the head draping down. There then was a light with all these random baby doll parts and rocks and such. It reminded me of the Sixth Sense/horror movie. We were asked to put our name and iarc on five stickey notes throughout the first floor of objects we wanted to draw or enjoyed. Then we were told we were going to make a map of the first floor so everyone taped off their own section of the museum to illustrate. I remember the first day I was very overwhelmed with it all and was afraid to touch anything. Yesterday, probably my sixth time going back, it sorta felt like home. haha. Here are some drawings I produced throughout the weeks. Hope you enjoy!

Lauren and I went back yesterday to finish up some drawings and take some pictures of the museum for you to see how clustered and overwhelming it really is. Our class was asked to invent a product this week made out of bottle caps. Bottles are accumulating more and more everyday and we need to find ways to reuse them to save the environment. After brainstorming separately we were asked to pair up and work together.

Our Sketches.

After listing pro's and con's of each item we decided that a placemat would be the most functional and creative product we could create.

The next step to our process was going around to every single door in the dorm asking for bottlecaps. We needed to do this first to see the color results to create our design. We then went back to the studio and sorted out all of the colors. We noticed a dominance of clear and white caps with various little amounts of colors. We chose orange, blue, and green because it is a triadic color scheme on the wheel and we thought they worked well together.

After getting advice on the design from outsiders we redesigned our concept and plan. Since there was no way we could collect even more caps we decided to break apart the first model and reuse the caps.

This week we were assigned to draw people in their environment. I defiantly think I am improving on observing and drawing figures, but i am struggling still with capturing facial characteristics.This was drawn at the CoffeeBreak off Spring Garden Street. The mans face is off but I tried to capture the outside scene beyond the windows. I intentionally spilled my mocha on the end of the drawing but you cant really tell what it is scanned on here. Looks a bit better in my sketchbook.

I really like this one, I think because of the outside landscape. It was nice to go to more organic forms in the background.

This semester we were all asked to take a fruit/vegetable and draw it. Front, Top, Side, cut open, zoomed in, zoomed out, etc. We were then assigned to make graphic patterns out of the fruit. Once that was done we were asked to each bring in some sort of tool. I choose a wine/bottle opener. We were assigned to distort the graphic patterns with the motion the tool creates and/or incorporate the tool into the patterns. For the most part I enjoyed this, seeing how you can go from such an organic form, like my orange, to such graphically pleasing designs. Then became the harder assignment. Create a haiku from your pattern/fruit and create a 2D statement that goes side by side. Well I am not "wordly" gifted and I struggled with this writing and rewriting. I was finally satisfied in the end with it, focusing on the layers of the orange.

Once this was all said and done we were then assigned to construct a model/visual statement of one of our distorted patterns. Iteration after iteration mine transformed from a "birthday cake" to some sort of hurricane tunnel. I chose to downsize the scale a lot because I felt it created a more physically pleasing space for a person to fit in and more purposeful. Once everything was made, we were assigned groups to present in. We were asked to display 15 of our best drawings and 4 models showing our process along the way. I think it turned out very well in the end.

This drawing was done at Tate Street Coffee. I began on the right side of the page but soon hated it, beings the girl does not look like my friend at all. Then once that did not turn out so right I wasn't feeling it so I moved on to the left. I believe this drawing turned out the best out of them all. The lines are more loose yet still capture the scene.These drawings below were all done at Starbucks back home in Charlotte. Unfortunately there weren't many people to draw and once I remotely started sketching their body they got up and left. So this is my parents below. My mom kept moving her face and then you couldn't see it anymore so that's where the disturbing black blob came from.

This is inspired by Paula Becker. I was not aware though that we weren't allowed to use gray markers. I thought it turned out pretty well except the grays were off, one was warm and one was cool but it was fun to work with.

This was inspired by Tommy Kane's blog. I love how sketchy he is with his lines.This is inspired by Y K B K, I love the little dots on the walls to add a sense of texture. I wish I had created more tonal values but my thumbnails were focused more on composition and moments rather than the values.

This drawing was inspired from a blog I found called Le Pen Quotidien. I loved the variation of line weight and quality in his drawing however it had color in it as well. My drawing didn't turn out as well because it was lacking the color quality.This drawing was inspired by a second year's blog, Tim Robinson. I loved his sketchy yet controlled lines, it adds character.

I'm not totally sure if I did these correct, I missed the class they were assigned, however I did my best interpreting the assignment. I wasn't sure if it could be detail drawings of anything.Piping above my desk. This is my favorite. You can really see the detail of the clamp supporting the pipes together.
These are the light fixtures above my desk. I thought it was interesting how they incorporated the screw holding the slates of glass into the design. If it was not meant to be there then they would have made it more discrete.

Here is the beam next to my window. It is amazing how it is supporting the whole frame of the building. I love how big the bolts are, it works with the design of the building.

i love my bag, print, size, and everything about it, but it sucks my things in like a black hole. when i'm getting ready to go into the caf' i have to search frantically for my card, i'm sure the lady knows me by now. i think this problem is hereditary. my mother copes with the same problem.
my make up. no matter how i organize it. it is still impossible to find the one thing im looking for. the angles and such are very off on this one, i'd have to say the only thing i enjoy is the "great lash" mascara.

In drawing class yesterday we had to draw our classmates posing with and /or around the cubes. It was supposed to help us draw our classmates because we could visualize the proportions against the cubes to make them accurate. Here are two sketches of the time capsules I decided to pick as my final two. I had a hard time illustrating the wire and shading it without getting too much charcoal on it. I also think that the whole at the top is just a little too dark.
This is the time capsule I have chosen to work with in the end. The infamous cube...It was sort of hard to shade the black because I knew it was black but not as dark in areas as I first assumed.

Well, I would have to say I am officially sick of "platonic forms" or CUBES! This definitely took me a lot longer than I expected. I fell asleep three times stippling and once decided to take a nap through it. But, I do have to say I think it looks pretty good!

I really like the shadows on this one. I think the bottom triangle shadow that is the darkest may look just a little too dark now that I am looking at it on here. Charcoal smudging was a lot faster process than the first stippling.

Tim posed for us on Thursday. Suzanne explained a technique she uses to get proportions right on people called "boxing off" the different shapes. I tried this technique however I feel like it made me think of the body too much so I went back to my technique of just drawing how I see it. I think this is actually probably the best figure drawing I have done.
This week we were privlidged enough to test out and view designer chairs up in the critique room. This was my favorite, It doesn't look too comfortable but it hit my back just right. I thought it was a cute chair for a kitchen table. It was called "the moulded chair" by Charles and Ray Eames.

I had a hard time illustrating the blanket underneath the scissors. It was very hard trying to capture the fleece texture against the metal.

This is supposed to be a fountain in the back of Karis's yard, there were lots of plants adn shubbery so I treated it as different sections instead of each individual flower or leaf. The grass in the background I tried doing in a pattern to make it more interesting however, I'm not sure that was the right approach. It does not show the depth that I saw outside.
This is my favorite. I feel like I really captured the correct highlights and shadows. I wish we could do more drawings in black paper with white colored pencils. I feel like I get a more dramatic result.
This has to be the least favorite of them all. It was the assignment where it asked to pick three tones and I just do not feel like it captures what I saw at all.

Well I never realized how much time was consumed on stippling. It is my favorite technique when it is complete, but the process is excruciating.

I think this one turned out the best, however I think the ball looks a little too light at the top.

Another thing that bothers me now that they are done is the balls float. I just copied the drawing out of the book and after I did them I realized how awkward they look.

My Favorite Revlon Nail Polish. I had a lot of fun using this technique of shading on it. I wasn't sure if I should shade the wall and floor though, I was afraid it would be too busy, but now I feel like it isn't complete.
This is a stool down in the lounge. I had a hard time showing the different values with just hatch marks on all the different angles of the stool so I added in some cross hatching. I didn't think we were allowed to do that but, Suzanne always says it is better to ask for forgiveness so I took the chance. = ) Overall, I enjoyed this assignment.

This week we were asked to take two fellow classmates previous projects and combine them into one. This was quite a stretch for me because Sarah's designs were so simple and Stephanie's were a little more crazy. And beyond that I really did not want to have to construct another box out of matte board. Here are some of my brainstorming ideas...

These are the two projects I decided to work with. Stephanie's project is the feather "jungle" and Sarah's is the matchbox pencil holder.
Here is the iteration that is leaning towards Stephanie's project more. I will never look at feathers again after cutting that many out. The biggest trouble I had was trying to find a glue that didn't make the paper crinkle, and would not leave a greasy residue behind. Paper cement seemed to peel off as soon as I made the creases but in the end that is what I ended up sticking to, it was the only one that wouldn't leave the greasy residue behind.

Here is my middle mix of Sarah's and Stephanie's. I took the concept of Sarah's pencil box and the feather form from Stephanie's.

Here is my iteration that was more like Sarah's. I kept with the natural paper but found one that looked like it had flecks of feather's in it to mimic Stephanie's and I chose to put the turquoise feather inside as the pencil holder because in Stephanie's project the turquoise egg is hidden in the middle. I felt like it would be a more suitable place than putting a feather latch on the outside.

Interior Environment "Zine"

This project we were assigned to design a "zine" that critically critiqued a category. I chose to critique Interior Environments. As I went along and created my "zine" I laid out the pictures and carefully chose where to place them, as well as the text. How big the space would be and so on. But, after I would glue the images and texts down I would realize that I should have done it a different way. That was my biggest issue with this project. I would think I laid it out all the best possible ways and then when I "sealed the deal" I would notice an even better layout. I also felt like some pages could use a line to guide the eye, yet I was very hesitant on making them in case it made it look too busy or awkward. I tried to focus on lining up pictures with datums and evenly spacing everything. I feel like if I were to do it over again I would be able to make it more visually pleasing to the reader. I got my images from "Metropolitan Home" October 2007; "Traditional Home" October 2007; "Good things for the Home" Fall 2007; and "In Style" Fall/Winter 2007

This week our assignment was to make 2 self portraits a day through Thursday and construct some kind of stand to display them in the lobby. Here our my portraits, I wanted to represent my eclectic-ness so all of my portraits are completely random and have no connection besides me.

"What makes Studio, Studio?"

We were asked, "What makes Studio, Studio?" I began to brainstorm and look through magazines to find a layout I enjoyed and that would work for me. I saw this one in Metropoliton Home "Small Spaces" March 2007 and I really liked how they had cut the image out on the right side and transfered it over to the left side. So this was the inspiration page of my "zine" layout. This is my attempt at making a layout. I really enjoyed the second page not only in the making of it but I enjoy the end result as well. The first page however, could use some definite help. I drew lines to make sure my writing was straight but obviously that didn't help as much as it needed to. Also, I messed up on my starting off letter and make it too small to begin with. That is why it now looks like it is running off the page, and is awkwardly drawn in the first place. Overall, im about 75% happy with my outcome. I also couldn't figure out how to combine the too layers (images) in Photoshop so I could show them on here as a spread.

Memory Box

First Iteration
As I was brainstorming memories that I wanted to use for this project I kept thinking of memories with my dad. I couldn't limit myself to one memory, and as I began to talk to other people about it they suggested maybe that it isn't necessarily what we do together but it is the bond that we share. So I went from there sketching out different ways to show a bond. I decided I would go with the weaving one because it was simple, yet was able to show a strong bond. I compared the bond we share to my brother and sister's bond with my dad. Their bond isn't bad by any means, yet I feel like ours is the strongest by far.

Second Iteration
My second iteration I decided to change the color of the paper to distinguish the different between my dad and the siblings. I also decided to weave all three sides, instead of leaving the other two solid to be able to compare the strength of the bonds.

Final Iteration
The last iteration I decided to make a little bit bigger. I felt like it was just a little too small to show the bonds. I also cut the strips of paper of my dad different sizes to illustrate the different memories we had together, some being bigger than others. I also bonded it together a little bit differently which resulted in a lot more cleaner, simple edge.

Pencil Box

First Iteration
My initial idea when I received this project was that I wanted to construct my project fully of recycled materials. The pencils I wanted to make the box for was my charcoal pencils, so i found a slick paper to line it in, so I could easily clean the box out to get the charcoal bits out. This paper went against using all materials I had found and recycled, and I wasn't too impressed by it. My biggest issue I had on this iteration was the lid. It wasn't supportive at all and it would sink into the center when you closed it. I wrote "drawing" words all over the box and words I associated drawing with. After I did it I then decided I didn't like it at all and if I wanted to continue my idea with the words I would cut out letters to spell out the words with newspaper.

Second Iteration
My second iteration I added in dividers so that each pencil would have it's own spot so they wouldn't roll around and hit each other. This would prevent a lot of charcoal residue on the paper. I decided not to cover it in the shiny paper because it wasn't very practical on quality construction. The paper I had was too thick and it went against my recycled materials. This time I constructed the box out of cardboard so it would be more structured and secure. I still had to use the matte board for the dividers because the cardboard was too thick. The layout was working a lot better for me, however the lid still was not. The shape was off and wasn't helping out the actual form of the box.

Third Iteration
This is my final iteration. I decided to line the bottom in matte board to break up the newspaper and rest the eye. I decided I need to keep it to just black and white print on the box and not pictures that had nothing to do with my box. I also changed the lid so that it would go in the direction of the strips of newspaper. This way the lid laid flat and overall was more successful rather than the "ying yang" shaped lid. I Modge Podged the lid to protect the newspaper and keep it more sealed. There were still some pieces that curled up a little. The dividers were not as successful as the second iteration and I feel like If I was more focused I would have succeeded at them better. The day I found out we needed to make our final iteration for Friday my best friend called me and told me her father has passed away that night and ever since the phone call I was a mess and was hard for me to focus. The next day in class we were allowed to work on our projects but I was only focusing on getting home to Charlotte to be with her. I know if circumstances were different I would have had a higher quality result in the end. Everyone has their off days and projects and I just have to improve for the next one.

So it's not hideous, yet nearly nothing of what I was expecting. I think I captured the shape of my nose well. I first laid it out in graphite and then turned all the lights off to get the shadow of one light. I think the eyes got a little too big, they remind me of a puppy dog or animated fish(Nemo, particularly ha.) One thing that really bothers me now also looking back is the left eye is as white as the one on the right. In the mirror though I really felt like they were the same white, which I know realistically that isn't possible. Eh, I give myself credit though that it turned out to look like a human...well part human, part Nemo.

Boredom struck fast as I waited for Tommy to come around. I had this song stuck in my head for the past two days . My Dad and I always rock out to some ZZ Top and made me think of him as I drew it.

This assignment got awkward fast because as soon as I begun to draw the people they became aware that I was.

This one I had some issues with because there was a slight lack in people, and when they did sit down they left very fast.

This girl to the left noticed me drawing her as she was stuffing her face with pizza and once she realized it she kept looking to the side embarrassed.

This is just a post for fun. I was going through my flashdrive and found some photographs of my art that I made last year in my art class. Hope you enjoy, I had a lot of fun with all of these pieces. They all are very expressionistic and have some sort of "whimsical-ness" about them.

This piece actually went up to New York for display last year because I won a gold key for a Scholastic art competition. The week I received it back in the mail I entered it into a art competition at my church and won a free trip to our beach retreat. It is four separate mono-prints with pastel and India ink on top.

EGGS!

"Design a place for an egg that celebrates a part of the egg using only paper." was my assignment. I went through about four ideas before I got to this one. When I was first assigned this project I googled information about eggs and information to give me inspiration. I came across this image that I found very interesting. It was a zoomed in image of an eggshell, I thought most people have no idea that this is what the shell looks like so that is what I wanted to try and imitate/celebrate of the egg.

So this drawing didn't last too long. "Sketchy" situations kept arising fast and I started to feel very uncomfortable. I told Lily we needed to leave fast, I didn't care that it wasn't finished after "sketchy" situation six occurred. The pencil lines kind of fill it in.

I really enjoyed drawing this one. I may have enjoyed it a little too much and captured more detailed then asked but I really loved the view I had and I sat comfortably under a tree on a bench. I was quite full too because me and Lily stopped in for a bite to eat at Natty Green's.

So, this was basically the hardest assignment given so far. I am amazed thought that it does somewhat look like a bike but I think the wheels look like a tomato or lemon cut in half..haha. This was a very "out of my comfort zone" assignment for me because it was so tedious and I am not used to drawing these negative spaces.

The next day I came back to the same spot to redraw it. I drew the cars this time to add more depth yet the sizes didn't decrease so therefore it really didn't benefit the drawing.

This is my second drawing of the day and I feel like the scale is better than the second one, yet its very crooked and I chose not to draw the cars which I soon realized that it helps show a sense of depth.

This is my first attempt of drawing the buildings on campus. This drawing is a view of the new science building. I think this one turned out best because the scale is right. However the last ten minutes of the drawing a FED-EX truck parked right in my view so I couldn't finish the drawing.

AS I SPENT ABOUT AN HOUR MINDLESSLY CRUISING THROUGH ARTIST BLOGS I FINALLY SAW ONE THAT REALLY CAUGHT MY EYE. IT WAS ACTUALLY MY TEACHER, SUZANNE BUCHANAN'S OPEN SKETCHBOOK. I LOVED THE STYLE OF HER WORK AND THE SUBJECT MATTER. HER SUBJECT MATTER IS COMMON AND SIMPLE, BUT SOMEHOW THE STYLE SHE SKETCHES IN MAKES IT VERY COMPELLING TO ME. I LOVE HOW AFTER SHE DRAWS HER PIECE SHE ISN'T YET DONE, SHE HAS TO ADD A LITTLE BLURB ONTO EACH WHICH SEEMS TO COMPLETE THE PIECE. I FEEL LIKE IF THERE WAS NO BLURB THE PIECES WOULDN'T HOLD MY INTEREST AS WELL. CHECK IT OUT!
